Course & elevation

Akron is a genuinely rolling, twisting city course — there’s no single monster climb, but the route never sits still, threading downtown streets, leafy neighborhoods, the Ohio & Erie Canal towpath and a handful of park ascents. Constant turns and changes of grade make it more demanding than its modest total climb suggests, and the lap-style course keeps you working to the finish on the field at Canal Park ballpark.

Key moments

  • Mile 1–3Out of downtown Akron past the ballpark — sharp early turns; settle your effort before the rollers begin.
  • Mile 8–12Quieter neighborhood climbs and descents where the course shows its rolling teeth.
  • Mile 18–22The Ohio & Erie Canal towpath — flatter and scenic, a chance to lock back into rhythm.
  • Mile 26Back downtown to finish on the field at Canal Park, the home of the local ballclub.

Pacing strategy

Run by effort, not splits — the relentless rollers and tight turns punish anyone who chases an even pace number. Stay smooth and conservative through the first half, use the canal towpath stretch to recover your rhythm, and save a little for the twisting return into downtown.

Fueling & hydration

Aid stations roughly every 1.5–2 miles with water and sports drink. Because the constant ups and downs raise the workload, fuel a touch earlier and more often than you would on a flat course, and take a gel before each climbing section rather than during it.

Weather

Late-September Akron is typically pleasant early-fall racing weather — starts in the upper 40s to mid-50s warming into the 60s, usually crisp and dry but with the odd warm or damp year.
