- Detroit, Michigan
- When:
- October
- Course:
- Mostly flat · international · loop
- Best run as:
- Even pace
Course & elevation
Detroit is mostly flat with modest total climbing, and a loop that starts and finishes downtown near Campus Martius. Its signature efforts are the two crossing structures: the long climb up and over the Ambassador Bridge into Windsor, Ontario, and the return through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel — the famous “underwater mile.” Because the route crosses an international border, runners must carry a valid passport or enhanced/REAL ID.
Key moments
- Mile 3–4The Ambassador Bridge — a roughly mile-long climb and crossing into Canada; ease into it.
- Mile 5–7Along the Windsor, Ontario riverfront before re-entering the U.S.
- Mile 7–8The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel “underwater mile,” with a gradual climb back to street level.
- Mile 23–26.2Through historic Detroit neighborhoods to the Campus Martius finish downtown.
Pacing strategy
Run the bridge by effort, not pace — the early climb tempts you to overspend. Settle back into rhythm through Windsor and the tunnel, and keep the international border requirements in mind: have your documents ready and your bib visible before the bridge.

Fueling & hydration
Aid stations roughly every 1.5–2 miles with water and sports drink. Fuel before the bridge and tunnel rather than on the climbs, so you have carbs on board when the effort rises.
Weather
Mid-to-late-October Detroit is cool fall racing weather — mornings often in the mid-to-upper 40s warming into the upper 50s, generally favorable with chilly early-morning starts.
