Course & elevation

Long known for its fast, flat reputation, the Lakefront Marathon now runs a rolling, roughly net-neutral course around downtown Milwaukee and Lake Michigan rather than the old point-to-point. More than 40% of the route runs along the lakefront, and the defining features are two crossings of the Hoan Bridge — a real climb early and a second sting late in the race.

Key moments

  • Mile 1–8Out of downtown Milwaukee and onto the lakefront — settle in before the first bridge.
  • Mile 8–9First Hoan Bridge climb — a short, steep ascent of around 125 feet; run it by effort.
  • Mile 10–24Long stretches along Lake Michigan — scenic but exposed to lake wind.
  • Mile 25A second Hoan Bridge climb on tired legs before the finish at the lakefront festival grounds.

Pacing strategy

Run effort over pace on the two Hoan Bridge climbs, especially the late one near mile 25. Keep something in reserve for that final ascent and respect the lake wind, which can swing your effort on the exposed lakefront miles.

Fueling & hydration

Frequent aid stations with water and sports drink, typically spaced every couple of miles. Fuel before each bridge climb so you’re not running empty when the road tilts up, and keep gels on a steady schedule.

Weather

Early-October Milwaukee is usually cool and good for racing — starts around the low-50s warming into the mid-60s, often with notable wind and humidity off Lake Michigan.
