Course & elevation

Shamrock is flat and fast, built for first-timers and personal bests. It heads north through residential streets and along tree-lined Shore Drive past First Landing State Park, then turns south through the resort area. The only notable rise is the bridge over Rudee Inlet before the course returns north for a boardwalk finish.

Key moments

  • Mile 1–10North through neighborhoods and along Shore Drive by First Landing State Park — flat and steady.
  • Mile 16Rudee Inlet bridge — the lone short rise on an otherwise flat course.
  • Mile 24–26.2Back north for the famous Boardwalk finish near the King Neptune statue.

Pacing strategy

A flat course that rewards even or slightly negative pacing. Keep the early miles controlled despite feeling fresh, ease over the Rudee Inlet bridge by effort, and use the flat boardwalk return to finish strong.

Fueling & hydration

Water stations appear roughly every 1.5 miles with Gatorade Endurance, and on-course energy gels are offered around miles 5.5 and 19. Carry your own gels too and fuel on a fixed schedule; an onshore wind can mask sweat loss.

Weather

Mid-March Virginia Beach is usually cool for racing (40s–50s), with wind off the Atlantic — sometimes a headwind on the oceanfront stretches — the main variable.
