Course & elevation

Tobacco Road spends more than 20 of its 26.2 miles on the American Tobacco Trail, a former railroad bed of crushed, compacted granite screenings with some asphalt sections. As an old rail line, its grades are very gradual, and the overall profile is flat with a downhill finish. The trail is shaded and 10–12 feet wide, so packs can bunch on the out-and-back.

Key moments

  • Mile 1–3Road miles out of Thomas Brooks Park before joining the trail — find your space early.
  • Mile 4–24The American Tobacco Trail: shaded, gently graded crushed stone — settle into a steady rhythm.
  • Mile 25–26.2Off the trail for a downhill finish back near the park — let it carry you home.

Pacing strategy

A genuine PR and Boston-qualifying course — run an even effort and trust the gentle grades. The trail surface is firm but slightly softer than road, so keep your turnover light; the out-and-back makes it easy to find runners at your pace to share the work.

Fueling & hydration

Aid stations roughly every 2 miles with water and sports drink. The shaded, flat trail makes for a consistent rhythm — keep a fixed gel schedule so the smooth miles don’t lull you into under-fueling.

Weather

Mid-March central North Carolina is usually cool and pleasant for racing (40s–50s), though an early-spring warm spell or humid morning can push fluid needs up.
