Course & elevation
Whistlestop runs on a converted railroad grade, which means a gentle, almost imperceptible net downhill the entire way — rail beds were engineered to never exceed a shallow gradient, so there are no real climbs and no jarring descents. The crushed-limestone surface is firm and forgiving, and the route tunnels through brilliant peak fall color in Wisconsin’s Northwoods toward the Lake Superior shore at Ashland. It’s a quietly fast course built for PRs and Boston qualifiers.

Key moments
- Mile 1–5Onto the rail-trail through the Northwoods — the gentle downhill is deceptively easy; don’t overstride.
- Mile 10–18Long, steady descending miles framed by peak fall color; a soft surface and even grade make rhythm effortless.
- Mile 22–25Quad fatigue from the constant slight downhill shows up here — keep your cadence quick and light.
- Mile 26Off the trail toward the Lake Superior shoreline finish at Ashland.
Pacing strategy
Even effort works beautifully on this gentle, continuous downhill, but the trap is letting the grade pull you into reckless early miles — that quietly trashes your quads. Run controlled and light-footed for the first half, keep your stride compact, and let the descent carry you to a strong, even finish.

Fueling & hydration
Aid stations spaced roughly every 2 miles with water and sports drink along the trail. The relentless gentle downhill is easy to take for granted — keep a fixed gel schedule, and remember the soft crushed-limestone surface adds a little extra work even as the grade helps you.
Weather
Early-October northern Wisconsin is cool and often ideal for racing — starts in the 30s to low-40s warming into the 50s, usually crisp and dry, with peak fall color along the trail.
